What is affiliate marketing
Affiliate marketing is a performance-based marketing strategy where a business rewards affiliates (partners) for driving traffic or sales to their products or services through the affiliate’s marketing efforts.
Here’s how it typically works:
Affiliate Joins a Program: An individual (affiliate) joins an affiliate program, often run by an e-commerce company, a service provider, or a platform that sells digital or physical products.
Affiliate Gets a Unique Link: Once they join the program, affiliates get a unique tracking link (or affiliate link) that tracks visitors or sales that come from their efforts. This could be a link to a product, a service, or a website.
Affiliate Promotes the Product/Service: Affiliates promote the product or service on their blogs, websites, social media accounts, or even through paid ads. They use their unique links to refer people to the business’s website.
Customer Makes a Purchase or Takes Action: If someone clicks on the affiliate’s link and makes a purchase or takes another predefined action (like signing up for a newsletter or subscribing to a service), the affiliate gets a commission. The action and payment structure depend on the program—some pay per sale (CPS), others pay per click (CPC), and some pay per lead (CPL).
Affiliate Gets Paid: Once the conditions are met (e.g., a sale is completed), the affiliate receives a payout, typically a percentage of the sale or a flat fee.
It’s beneficial for businesses because they only pay for actual sales or leads, making it a cost-effective way to increase their reach. For affiliates, it’s a way to monetize their audience, whether they have a large following or niche traffic.
